ELEVATE YOUR GAME

 A 12 WEEK PROGRAM FOR 10 – 14 YEAR OLDS

HOSTED BY: ROB ALMONY
April 22 2025 – July 13 2025

Parents,
For our first year of the Moyock Minutemen we had a turnout of 13 kids. These kids performed very well, and the parents saw tons of growth within knowledge of the game as well personal. Child at these ages need to build self-confidence and I firmly believe I have done so with them. I can’t wait to until next April when registration opens and we continue the growth and love of the sport in our community.

This training was great. I’ve seen a lot of growth in both confidence and skills throughout his training. I’m excited to see him implement his learned skills in games this season. The coaching was spectacular from both coach Robbie and coach Jack. The mix of age and skill made for some awesome learning opportunities as well. — Kayla

The quality of a soccer team has a lot to do with the leadership that’s guiding it. Coach Rob and Coach Jack do an outstanding job planning and executing solid drills that promote teamwork and individualized growth. This academy truly is an asset to the community, giving our youth an opportunity to develop skills not normally addressed through parks and rec programs. – Britt

This was our first year signing up our son for Moyock Minute Men and I’m glad we did. He knew 1 kid going in and ended up making lots of friends. Coach Rob & Jack made it fun and engaging. He learned so much including technical skills, intentional passing and as he says, “he became tougher”. I would highly recommend it. — Heather

I cannot recommend Moyock Minutemen enough to people! This camp is for ALL levels of soccer players. Coach Rob and Coach Jay not only demonstrate BUT are VERY hands on with the players. They don’t just tell the kids what to do, but they consistently do the drills with the players.

Coach Rob and Coach Jay interact with the players and encourage development in the most positive way. My daughter loved going to the camp the past two years and always raves about it to her travel team.

I hope this camp continues for the future and I hope all players consider this camp for their children who are not just playing but considering playing soccer! I appreciate these coaches and camp so much! –Jessica

Moyock Minutemen is a wonderful program for anyone who wants to hone their soccer skills. Coach Rob meets with the players three times a week. Each day they work on soccer fundamentals including dribbling, passing, and trapping, positioning on the field, shooting, and so much more. I didn’t realize how much my son improved until he was invited to play in a weekend tournament with his old team. His technique and ball control were much more refined than his old teammates. I was honestly impressed with the amount of growth he gained in just one year. I would recommend Moyock Minutemen to any serious soccer player. — Fernanda

Minutemen were a specialized group of colonial militia members who played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War. These highly trained and rapidly deployable forces were known for their ability to respond to threats at a moment’s notice, hence their name
Characteristics and Training
Minutemen were:
  • Generally younger and more mobile than regular militia members
  • Required to be ready for deployment within minutes
  • Provided with weapons and arms by local governments
  • Trained more frequently than regular militia (three to four times a week as tensions with Britain increased)
So, Coach Rob has taken these types of men from history and wanted to bring it to the field of today soccer players. His thought process is to have the players be able to perform at a minute’s notice!!!

Below are key elements that the Moyock Minutemen Training Program will utilize as our foundation as we progress through our training curriculum.  This style of play is implemented by US Soccer and will be our guiding philosophy as we begin a training curriculum here in Moyock, NC.

01

STYLE OF PLAY: General Overview

MATCH:

OFFENSIVE STYLE:

All participants will be encouraged to display an offensive style of play based on keeping possession and quick movement of the ball.

QUICK TRANSITIONS AND FINISHING:

Speed of play will come with practice, avoid over-dribbling, looking for an organized and quick movement of the ball and finishing will be encouraged in all age groups.

POSITION SPECIFIC:

A team must be organized defensively, keeping their specific positions in the formation.  However, players will be taught to look for spaces and movements to support forward when in the attack by moving away from their original positions.

FORMATIONS:

4-3-3 FORMATION:

Participants will be taught a 4-3-3 formation with different variations (4-2-3-1 or 4-1-2-3) to ensure all participants within our program are brought up learning the same formation, positions, and numbering system that Moyock Middle School and Currituck High School Soccer Programs utilize.

Back 4:

All formations used by our teams in 11–a-side games must keep a back 4 line.  The back 4 provides consistency in defense and allows space for the outside backs to move forward when attacking.

02

STYLE OF PLAY: Specific

TECHNICAL:      Each participant will become individually competent and proficient in the most important skills for each position.

  • PASSING AND RECEIVING:  Passing the ball on the ground with pace from different distances and receiving the ball while keeping it moving will be encouraged for all participants.
  • SHOOTING:  Participants must develop the ability to shoot from different distances.  All participants will be encouraged to shoot from any distance during match play.
  • BALL CONTROL AND TURNING:  Participants will be encouraged to keep close control of the ball and use different turning techniques to move away from a defender.

TACTICAL:     This component helps each participant fit into a team concept.  Our aim is to create clever players, capable of adapting to the constantly changing circumstances of the game.

  • PLAYING OUT FROM THE BACK:   All participants must feel comfortable playing the ball from the back through the midfield and from there to the final quarter of the field.
  • POSSESSION AND TRANSITION:  All participants must learn to keep possession of the ball a one-two touch game.  Participants will be encouraged to support and move, thus creating passing options.  Once the passing game is consolidated the participants will learn to transfer the ball in the most efficient way from one area of the field to another.
  • OFFENSE-DEFENSE QUICK TRANSITION AND VICE VERSA:  When possession is lost, players must react quickly and apply pressure to regain the ball.  Once possession is regained, players will be positioned immediately to counter-attack.

PHYSICAL:     Strong and resilient participants will provide a sound base for a significant advantage in future competitive matches.  A tired participant will struggle to think properly and will be prone to commit errors.

  • SPEED AND AGILITY:  Very Important qualities that will be introduced and will become evident in participants as we progress in training.
  • ENDURANCE:  Participants will be trained to be resilient to high-intensity action.
  • STRENGTH AND POWER:  Strong players will be able to develop their speed more quickly, prevent injuries and be more competitive on the pitch.

PSYCHOSOCIAL:      We are all effected by our emotions.  All participants will train to use these emotions for their advantage and turn them into strengths and not weaknesses.

  • RESPECT AND DISCIPLINE:  Participants will learn to adapt to a role within a team concept and respect their fellow teammates, coaches, referees, and opponents.
  • COOPERATION:  Each participant will be a part of a unit, and will cooperate with teammates to achieve the objectives for a given task, session or match play.
  • COMPETITIVENESS:  Competitive players will be commended for their hard efforts and focus.

PRINCIPLES OF PLAY

COACHES/ADMINISTRATORS:

1.  Possession games are a means to improve both the technique and tactical understanding of the game.

2.  Opposition will be encouraged to increase the competitiveness of all participants.

3.  High-intensity work habits based on speed and agility.  Short but intense working periods.

PARTICIPANTS:

1.  1, 2, or 3 Touch Maximum:  Minimizing the number of touches improves the speed of play.

2.  Keep the Game Simple:  Do not force situations, over dribble or be careless with the ball.

3.  Keep the Ball on the Ground:  A ball on the ground is easier to control and can be moved more efficiently by the team.

4.  Accuracy and Quality of Pass:  Passing must be firm and accurate, with the proper weight.

5.  First Touch:  Make a clean and controlled first touch without stopping the ball.  Take the touch away from pressure and into free space.

6.  Perception and Awareness:  All players with or without the ball should constantly scan the field.

7.  1v1 Situations:  Encourage determination to regain control of the ball in defense and keep it simple in the attack by taking a touch to the side, at pace, to beat the defender.

8.  Individual Transition:  Participants must react quickly when possession change occurs from offense to defense and vice-versa.

9.  Shooting:  Always keep an eye on the goal.  All participants will be encouraged to shoot.

10.  Take Risks:  Soccer is an error prone sport and mistakes are part of the game and overall learning process.  Participants are encouraged to take risks in training sessions to increase speed of play.

TEAM:

1.  All Participants will Attack and all Participants will defend:  All participants must learn to be involved in the game as a unit.

2.  Numerical Advantage:  Soccer is a game of numbers where we try to create a numerical advantage in the attack and avoid being in a numerical disadvantage in defense.

3.  Flow of the Ball:  The ball should flow from inside (of the space) to outside and outside to inside.  Balls out wide are more secure and ball in the middle increases the options of play.

4.  Triangle Principle and Passing Options:  The participant in possession of the ball must receive constant support and have at least two passing options.

5.  Speed of Play:  Quick movement of the ball will create 2v1 situations.

6.  Movement off the Ball:  Find the best available space to create passing options for the participant in possession of the ball.

7.  Pressure as a Unit:  Organized pressure forces the opponent to commit errors.

8.  Transition:  Improve transition by reducing the number of passes needed to arrive at the target area or the opponent’s goal.

9.  Direction of the Game:  The game flows in two directions.  Be mindful of keeping the essence of this game within each sessions training plan.

10.  Take Initiative during the Game:  Team breakdowns will occur.  The team must be capable of adapting to new situations and imposing its own style of play during the game.
